Hilton Americas-Houston’s Gingerbread Sweet Shop Tips Scale at 2.5 Tons
Life-Size Holiday Display Tempts with 7.6 Million Calories
It’s beginning to look a lot like…gingerbread! Hilton Americas-Houston Pastry Chef Mahesh Weerasinghe and Pastry Sous Chef Glenna Artripe, along with the hotel’s culinary and property operations teams, have created a new holiday gingerbread display like no other. Set in the midst of the lobby-level lighted winter wonderland of ‘Tis the Season, over 2.5 tons and 7.6 million calories of sugary confection awaits visitors this holiday season.
A monumental life-size Santa’s Gingerbread Sweet Shop made entirely of gingerbread and chocolate reaches toward the ceiling of the main lobby rotunda, towering over the chocolate holiday scene set below. Reaching almost as high as the hotel’s iconic blown-glass chandelier, the immense holiday structure is handcrafted from 800 pounds of gingerbread, with each cookie-brick having been applied by hand, one at a time.
The massive building is covered with hand-made sugary confections, with both the exterior and interior fully decorated and furnished. A chocolate Christmas tree covered with fresh fallen sugar snow towers nearby, sugar icicles sparkle in the light and peppermint candy stepping stones lead to the sweet shop door.
The illuminated interior of the sweet shop allows visitors to see inside, where a candy chandelier twinkles over a checkerboard floor made entirely of white and dark chocolate, highlighting shelves stocked with candies of all kinds.
Of course, no holiday event would be complete without a visit from Santa Claus. 1600 Bar+Grille, located in the lobby of the Hilton Americas-Houston and adjacent to the gingerbread house, will again be host to the jolly old elf himself. Children and adults alike can create holiday memories with Breakfast with Santa, Saturday and Sunday mornings through December 22nd. Photos with Santa are always a must, and the perfect Santa spot awaits nearby.
It’s the season for lights, and this year’s ‘Tis the Season lighting display at Hilton Americas-Houston features thousands of lights that twinkle and sparkle, reflecting in the granite and marble mosaic floor like pools of liquid light. Branches covered in lights arch high over the poinsettia-lined walkway through the lobby, leading to a towering 14’ decorated tree — a truly elegant backdrop for the perfect holiday selfie!
An estimated 2,200 man hours and five months of creative work and construction went into the making of this intricately carved and sculpted confectionary creation. This delectable gingerbread and chocolate Christmas vignette, open to the public, is on display in the main lobby rotunda of Hilton Americas-Houston, located at 1600 Lamar Street, through Sunday December 30, when the lacquer-preserved work of art will go into storage awaiting next year’s additions.
Directly connected to the George R. Brown Convention Center, Hilton Americas-Houston contains the city’s largest number of guest rooms, ballrooms, and hotel meeting space. AAA Four Diamond rated hotel boasts 1,200 elegantly appointed guestrooms, restaurants, lobby bars, Starbucks and full service spa and health club.
